Haus der Musik

Master’s thesis autumn 2015
Honoured with the ETH Silver Medal
Department of Architecture, ETH Zurich
Professor Adam Caruso

The brief for this diploma project asked for the design for a Haus der Musik – a place for musicians to practice and perform, and the public to enjoy music. The given building site is situated in a very heterogeneous district of Zurich.

The work of architect John Hejduk served as a reference. His ‘masks’ are a collection of figurative objects, a fictional design for a spectacle in the city.

The project extends beyond the boundaries of the building site. It aims to clarify the unsettled urban situation, define public open space and offer musicians in Zurich a suitable platform.
The project consists of various buildings, each with their own playful character and autonomous volume. The ground floor plays a key role. The cafe, workshop and concert hall are located on the ground floor and enable the institution to become part of the public realm.
