Wee Cottage

Private cottage in Glencolumbkille, Ireland
2024- (ongoing)

Located in the remote coastal village of Glencolumbkille in County Donegal, this modest three-bedroom cottage is set amidst vast moors and the rugged Atlantic coast.

The cottage was built in the 1970s using simple blockwork construction with pebble dash render and a slated roof. Used as a holiday retreat for over thirty years, it has begun to show signs of wear and is in need of a sensitive refurbishment.

The project scope includes structural underpinning, full insulation of the floor, walls and roof, and the installation of a new heating system powered by an air source het pump, combined with underfloor heating for improved efficiency. The internal layout will be retained, while the kitchen and bathroom undergo full refurbishment. A new stone floor, sourced from a nearby quarry, will bring a strong connection to the local landscape.
The design approach balances essential upgrades in comfort and sustainability with respect for the building’s straightforward character, ensuring it remains a simple, welcoming home in a remarkable setting.
